Hondarribia’s boats are compromised with environmentally non aggressive fishing methods, looking for the fishing resources sustainability. Additionally, the Association cooperates in an active way with continuous stock situation researches, to have a real and actual knowledge on the fishing grounds.
Together with these methods, the fleet looks for the best quality in the obtained fishes. That for, excellence on capture and handling, together with feasible trazability systems are chased. As a result the Association is allowed to use the Kalitatea quality brand.
Some of the main obtained species are anchovy, mackerel, red tuna and albacore tuna. However, there are also important volumes of other species such as sardine or horse mackerel.
Beginning march and till middle june, the fleet is involved in fishing anchovy, mackerel, sardine and other several species. From then on, the red tuna fishery will start, followed by albacore. Those two species will be fished till end of November.
› Pole and Line Fishing
Pole and line fishing, together with the one carried out with hand apparel, is by definition the most selective one. It requires a big work strength, and a continuous effort to obtain the best results.
This fishing system requires the use of live bait, which Hill be from different species depending on the final target, red tuna or albacore.
This method is reckoned as the best one at the time of obtaining outstanding qualities on the captured species.
› Trolling
Apparel composed by a line with a hook of the kind and size necessary for each species. The hook is carrying a weight not to get on the surface, and is provided with artificial bait.
Those apparels will be placed at both sides of the vessel, with two pole vaults, called wings in a transversal position, in order to support the resistance made by the catch. In each of these wings there will be 4 to 5 rings, holding a trolling each one. At the stern another 3 trollings will be placed.
› Blue Fin Tuna
No doubt, this is the king of the species captured in Hondarribia. Fished by pole and line or hand apparel techniques, depending on the size, this species is one of the most valuated ones in the tuna world. The exceptional characteristics of the fishing grounds, together with the shortage of this resource, make it a in a more than valuated product.
Hondarribia’s boats posses the resources and the skills to get the maximum quality. As a demonstration, there we have the different past and present experiences in cooperation with the demanding Japanese market. The trial shipments made by Hondarribia’s boats have always yielded exceptional results, both in prices and product appreciation. In this sense, the market knows about this product being exceptional, for species, shortage and treatment quality.
The captains and crew have received training by qualified technicians, on fishing, handling and preservation of the king of tuna species.
Since the ICCAT was constituted, we have cooperated with the scientists, year after year, by supplying detailed information on captures, efforts and sizes of captures, in a totally transparent way. We also cooperate in scientific tagging campaigns, and there is a large number of scientific observers on board.
About red tuna, and as a consequence of its stock situation, in 2006 a Red Tuna Recovery Plan was adopted in Croatia, with objective measures which our fleet took into practice without any delay right in the past 2007 campaign, thus strictly filling the Recovery measures for this species.
